Stitching for your Sweetie
It’s just under a month until Valentine’s Day and baby, it’s cold outside! Time to get to work on a quick and warm project for someone special.
Here is our quick guide to great gifts for your Valentine.
For Him:
Knucks – Knit these cozy fingerless gloves in DK weight yarn and spell out a Valentine’s message on the knuckles! (Micah says “Knit with worsted for him, to make them larger!”)
Suggested yarn: Tara Tweed for something tweedy but still super soft.
Turn A Square - A quick-knitting hat that lets you play with color (a great way to use up leftover worsted weight yarn!)
Suggested yarns: Brooklyn Tweed Shelter or Imperial Stock Ranch Columbia 2-py and Noro Kureyon
Regular Guy Beanie - A great basic guy’s hat in an aran weight. Guys love basic hats!
Suggested yarn: Imperial Yarns Columbia or the Fiber Co Organik
Graham - A slouchy ribbed hat in worsted weight.
Suggested yarn: Neighborhood Fiber Co Studio Worsted
For Her:
Honey Cowl - Cozy cowl in a slip stitch pattern perfect for showing off a beautiful hand-dyed DK weight yarn. You need just 225 yards for the short version or 450 for the long version.
Suggested yarn: Dream in Color Everlasting DK
Noro Striped Scarf - Two colors of self-striping yarn combine for a gorgeous effect. (You’ll need two balls of each color.)
Suggested yarn: Noro Silk Garden or Noro Kureyon
French Press Felted Slippers - Quick to knit, adorable, and warm! A couple of cute buttons, a quick spin in the washing machine, a little hand sewing, and you’ve got a smashing pair of slippers. (Staff Tip: Paint a design on the soles in puffy paint to make your slippers less slippery on wood floors.)
Suggested yarn: Stonehedge Fiber Mill Shepherd’s Wool
From Norway With Love - A sweet colorwork hat covered in hearts! (there are matching mittens and a scarf too!) Pick a light worsted or DK weight yarn – great for using up those leftovers you’ve been saving. (Staff Tip: If you’re just knitting the hat, try a self-striping yarn like Noro Silk Garden for the hearts – easy-peasy color changes!)
Suggested yarn: Stonehedge Fiber Mill Shepherd’s Wool, Spud and Chloe Sweater
For You!
Ishbel - Hey girl, get yourself that gorgeous skein of hand-dyed fingering weight or lace-weight yarn you’ve been secretly admiring and knit yourself something pretty!
Suggested yarn: NFC Maisonette or Dream in Color Smooshy with Cashmere
Thuja – Hey guy – you deserve some hand-knitted socks! These knit up super fast in worsted weight and make great boot socks for winter.
Suggested yarn: NFC Studio Worsted or Ella Rae Superwash

I am in my January funk. I want to make something. I don’t want to make something. Okay, I did get reindeer tracks cowl done during the Sunday football games. But I had no idea what I felt like (except sleeping and trying to stay warm)) I need some grey. Suddenly grey is the color. So I say “when it warms up I’ll stop at Space”. And it’s not warming up. Then three people at work asked me to knit them hats and they’d “pay me for the yarn” – Ain’t gonna happen. Labor is NOT free. So your timing is perfect for SOMETHING. And I never made the Honey Cowl until two weeks ago and loved it. And my five year old requested “owls going around her whole neck” child-speak for a little cowl. So today is the day I shall humble myself to taking the free King Street trolley BOTH ways and hit space and now that the Inauguration crazy hours we work is over, I can think about January is almost over, and every day in February can’t be bad. And…. the 7 day forcast is calling for rain and temps in the 60s NEXT Thursday!
Did you see the article in the Balto. newspaper last week about “old people bringing knitting back?” I had no idea it left!!!!!!! And it’s not the “old” people bringing it back it’s people whose artistry knows no bounds!
So thanks for the quickie knitting digest today!
I didn’t see that article! If you find a link, send it my way.
