New material for our yarn class

by Danielle | March 17, 2010

Kel, Veronica and Lesley have decided that this video will now be part of our yarn class as it provides all sorts of accurate information regarding the llama and its habitat.

It could also be supplemental material for the Maryland Sheep and Wool Festivalprep course” that we are offering this spring. Don’t know about Sheep and Wool? It is the largest fiber festival in our area. Think yarn convention meets county fair. You can meet sheep, watch sheep be sheared, buy their fiber or yarn and even eat them! (sick, i know…but I can’t resist a good plate of lamb.)

Red sweater for Valentine’s Day?

by Danielle | February 12, 2010

I finished the Geodesic Cardigan by Connie Chang Chinchio. It was in the last issue of Knitscene, which is, by the way, one of the best issues of any knitting magazine I have ever seen – filled cover to cover with wonderful projects.

IMG_0307

I started it on the second day of my fever / flu and was able to get a lot done during snowpocalypse 2010.  From what I can tell, this is the first completed one since the issue came out…I didn’t realize what a nice Valentine’s Day color it would be! This is worked up in Dragonfly Fibers Sock, color dragonberry. Yum! The tucks are created with shortrows. It is a lot of straightforward stockinette stitch but there are quite a few things to track at once. I recommend an iphone row counter app for this one.

Be sure to join us on Sunday for a special Valentine’s Day treat. We are serving up “blushing” punch and sweet treats all day long, 11 am – 5 pm. And then Monday, President’s Day, is our big sale! Winter yarn on sale while it’s still winter!

10 am – 7 pm

Discounts of 10-40% off many many yarns in the shop. We are also blowing out of all single patterns (except Blue Sky Alpacas and Spud and Chloe).  Get discounts of 40% off on our single patterns.

fibre girl opens her new club registration!

by Danielle | February 6, 2010

fibre girl club

A bit more about my club:

Each month will feature enough yarn for a project and will be paired with either a pattern or pattern suggestions. Some of our months even feature a new and exclusive pattern from amazing designers. The projects vary from scarves and cowls to mitts, shawls, socks and more. Some packages include luxury fibres while others include hand dyers & exclusive colors or unique small companies. While I have already selected (and in some cases, received) the yarns and “goodies,” I won’t be giving out any hints beyond the first month! I can promise that each month will be themed around some of my favorite things or places. I will feature other hip local businesses and their products as well.

There are two options for delivery: store pick up or shipment. If you would prefer shipment, your package will be mailed 2 days prior to the opening of store pickup. Shipping is through the US Postal Service, priority mail and is $30 for six shipments.

To register:

REGISTRATION IS NOW CLOSED! THE CLUB IS FULL

The fine print:

There are no refunds or cancellations for the club. Each themed month will value at or above $50 in yarn, notions and / or goodies.  Packages will be shipped by the 15th of each month. You may change your shipping address at any time. We regret we can not ship internationally at this time. Those who have selected store pick up will be permitted to pick up in the shop two days after the shipments have been made. You will receive an email to indicate that the club has been shipped and what date the store pickup is available. If you intend to give this as a gift, please be sure to indicate the recipient’s name and address in the checkout process. The club is limited to 50 participants.

Congratulations fibre space community!

by Danielle | January 19, 2010

Your yarn purchases this weekend resulted in a contribution of $1,761.40 to Oxfam America!

Oxfam has approximately 200 people on the ground in Haiti right now, including a group of highly-experienced emergency specialists.  Their team is supporting rescue efforts, assessing the damage, and responding with public health, water, and sanitation services to prevent the spread of waterborne disease.

Learn more here about Oxfam’s work in Haiti or to donate, if you missed our weekend event.

We will donate 20% of our sales this weekend to Oxfam, who is working right now in Haiti for disaster relief

by Danielle | January 15, 2010

On January 12, Haiti was struck by a massive earthquake that is likely to result in tens of thousands of deaths. The damage to the country and its people is devastating, and we have yet to even know the full impact of this disaster. Haiti is the poorest country in our hemisphere, with a vast majority living on less than $2 a day.

The team here at fibre space wants to help. This weekend, we will donate 20% of all of our sales of yarn, needles, notions and books to Oxfam America.

oxfam
Why Oxfam? As many of you know, I have worked in the non profit sector for almost ten years. Working with and supporting charities remains a big part of my life, even as I have moved into the “for profit” world. My studies in graduate school were focused on Latin American economic and social development. My passion for this part of the world led me to the development and human rights profession. Because of Oxfam’s focus on development through the “lens” of human rights, I focused my graduate thesis on their work internationally. When I graduated, I continued to support the organization through charitable contributions, as their headquarters location in Boston meant that I wouldn’t even be able to actually work for them.
Oxfam’s offices in Haiti were also hit by the quake.  They have approximately 200 people on the ground in Haiti right now, including a group of highly-experienced emergency specialists.  Their team is supporting rescue efforts, assessing the damage, and responding with public health, water, and sanitation services to prevent the spread of waterborne disease. Additional manpower is being sent from Oxfam offices around the world. To learn more here about Oxfam’s work in Haiti.

Lots of FOs and a knitalong on New Years Eve

by Danielle | December 28, 2009

Folks have been furiously finishing holiday gifts and sending along photos. Here are some highlights:

Cameronne finally finished her husband’s Xmas Sweater, the Blue Sky Alpacas Men’s Ribbed Sweater pattern in the Fibre Company Organik – color jungle.

jonxmassweater2009

Amanda finished her Eastlake Sweater in Berroco Pure Merino (both available at the shop)

Eastlakeamanda

Since the snowstorm had her out of work for a bit, she also finished this Cosima sweater in Berroco Cuzco. Pattern and yarn available at the shop.

Cosima

I finally finished my nephew’s holiday coat and matching hat. This is the Tugboat Coat by Sublime available in a Sublime pattern book at the shop. I used Berroco Pure Merino DK.

tugboat coat

What else did you all finished in the last few days? Doesn’t it seem like the time has been flying by?!

On New Year’s Eve join us in fibre space for a day long knitalong for this awesome, quick and dirty thing:

destroyed_prelim_medium

Thank you Martha Merzig for an awesome and amazingly simple pattern! The Destroyed Cowl can be wrapped around the neck once for a tighter fitting cowl or worn with a nice shirt for a night out on the town (like New Years!)

I am still figuring out what I will use for this. Some contenders:

Malabrigo worsted – 1 hank

Shokay Yak – 2 hanks

Neighborhood Fiber Co Worsted – 1/2 a hank…matching fingerless mitts?

Berroco Pure Merino – 2 balls

Spud & Chloe Sweater – 2 hanks

So come join us. We are open from 10 am – 4pm, closing just in time for you to get home and get ready for New Year’s celebrations.

Don’t panic – stitch!

by Danielle | December 18, 2009

Since my mom had surgery yesterday, I spent the morning with her running to a doctor’s appointment and then to safeway so she could pick up gingerale and crackers to help recover. Well little did I know, the region is being hit by a massive storm that has caused complete panic on the part of everyone in Clinton MD. While you are standing in line at your local grocery store, here are some helpful tips from our friends at the Washington Post.

Or, you could come by fibre space for the holiday party and knit or crochet and sip hot cider instead.

And no worries, we will be open tomorrow. If I can get to this store on foot, we will be open. Veronica and I are a mere five blocks from the store, so we plan to be here snow or no snow.
