What are you? I am definitely a starter. In the last 12 hours, I have started two new projects, with no sign of finishing anything else that is currently sitting on my ottoman. I have the fronts and back of the balloon sleeve jacket finished and half of a sleeve done. I am also a foot into the Cameronne dress worked in SPORT WEIGHT. (its just not right to knit a dress in sport weight) I have socks that I have been working on because my only other pair of hand knit socks now have a hole in them. And I am also working on a quick scarf design using Neighborhood Fiber Company Studio Sock and mohair / silk (coming soon!)
So while I switched between those three four projects on Sunday for about 14 hours, nothing is finished. So last night I started this sweater for my nephew:

It comes in a hooded version too and I can’t decide which one to make. If I make the non hooded version, he will definitely get the hat. Fortunately, they are the same pattern and I don’t need to decide until I am almost done. I selected Berroco Pure Merino DK because our cotton blend Sublime yarn is not nearly warm enough for a coat in Pittsburgh.
I also came into the shop early this morning to work on my newsletter and get this vest started for my Dad’s birthday. you may remember the 24 hour socks that I knitted him one year. This vest needs to be about the same. His birthday is the 13th and I need to finish it and possibly get it in the mail (or keep it here until he comes down for Thanksgiving). It looks like this vest will be Shepherd’s Wool, although I haven’t decided on the colors yet.

So Wednesday (Veteran’s Day), I will be hosting the first of several Holiday Project Lock Ins. If you are a “starter” and need to actually finish something, join me on Wednesday a day of hot teas and project finishing. Bring those holiday gifts and lets get them done!

Be sure to cast your vote for the Halloween Party next week (Thursday, 6-9 pm) – to help determine which movie we will show. We had to remove Nightmare Before Christmas because Disney won’t allow us to show it
They are showing it in select theaters until Halloween. I have added Corpse Bride for those of you who love Tim Burton. I am closing the voting tomorrow, so get it in soon!

The “With the New Cowl Neckline” project is blocking before I seam it together. (you definitely want to block the pieces before you start seaming…makes the process SO much easier) I will then need to do a little bit of crochet edging and block again after that edging is added.

With the New Cowl Neckline worked in Blue Sky Alpacas skinny dyed cotton
So now that the cowl neck shirt is blocking…
I am plotting my next sweater project, as I am committed to knocking out a sweater a month this season. (and no cheating with baby sweaters for the nephew). I have long had this amazing yarn in my stash from friend Karida Collins of Neighborhood Fiber Co.

She dyed it specially for me:) It is chunky weight (not even something she normally carries) and the color is more burgandy red than her regular cooper circle colorway. I had planned on using it for the Balloon Sleeve Jacket by Olga in the Sensual Knits book. There just isn’t enough yardage, no matter how many times I look at other people’s projects on Ravelry. So I have decided to make the jacket in Blue Sky Alpacas Worsted, color red. I ordered it yesterday (we don’t stock the yarn but can order it) and it should be here by the end of the week. The pattern calls for 1000 – 1,600 yards of worsted weight yarn. I think it would be awesome in anything from Shepherd’s wool to Kathmandu Aran Tweed. I plan to make mine a little larger and use it as a coat this Fall / Winter. So excited about it! I thought that we would feature the entire Sensual Knits book this month. Anyone interested in doing a knitalong for the Balloon sleeve sweater? We could start up this week! We have lots of copies of the book in the store and we have a couple samples of projects from the book as well. We will offer a 10% discount on the materials for your Balloon Sleeve Jacket and the Sensual Knits book through the end of October.

Friday night, 7-9 p.m. is our next workshop / retreat. This one features Tanis Gray, the former Yarn Editor for Soho Publishing (home of Vogue Knitting!) Tanis will be teaching fair isle technique, including how to create your very own design for a hat and mitten set. I am super excited, as I really want to make a custom design to use for my holiday gifts this year…and because you are designing your own, you can use any gauge yarn! We are also serving up appetizers from Rustico (mmm…mac and cheese balls) and lattes or hot cocoa. Don’t miss out!
Prerequisites: ability to knit and purl and work some increases and decreases. Experience with colorwork would be helpful but not necessary
*This is a two week workshop, meeting Oct 2 & 9 from 7-9 p.m.

This week’s Stitch in Space (Thursday, September 17, 2009) will feature the film Dirty Dancing, in honor of Patrick Swayze, who died this week of pancreatic cancer. The film first aired in 1987, and I remember my parents “fasting forward” through all of the scenes that they found inappropriate for my brother and I to see. This left a very confused pair of children. Without most of the dance scenes, the movie is sorta confusing. I later saw it with my mother (parents were divorced and my mother pretty much allowed us to do what we wanted when we visited her). After the second viewing, I finally understood the movie. The soundtrack is amazing and I hope that you will all sing along
See you tomorrow!
