Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef Project

The Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef Project is a collaborative fiber art exhibition started by Margaret and Christine Wertheim of the Institute for Figuring in Los Angeles, CA. Its mission is to raise public awareness about the plight of the world’s coral reefs from over-fishing, pollution and global warming through the tactile pleasures of handicraft. As part of the exhibition, we have the opportunity to build a “satellite reef” throughout the summer that will be exhibited with the Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef at the Sant Ocean Hall in the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History, starting October 16, 2010. All contributions that we make to the reef will be credited to each of us individually!

Contribute to the fibre space reef

Join our Thursday night “Stitch in Space” every week, starting June 24th to make your own piece to the crochet coral reef. Our staff will be on hand to get your started or you can find your own inspiration at the Institute For Figuring’s Gallery of Crocheted Models. Our reef will be on display in our front window before heading off to the Smithsonian in August to become part of the larger reef project.
